Zen yoga poses are part of an Oriental system that combines the practice of asanas with Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese. Postures are categorized according to the meridian primary, they touch. A meridian can be understood as being similar to a blood vessel, in that it has an energetic structure that corresponds with the human body, but rather a channel for energy to move (instead of blood).
The alignment of these exercises with meridians specific is what makes yoga zen such powerful healing modality. In fact, teachers of this Oriental system emphasize its' capacity to help address the root causes of the disease .. This article explores what is meant by that, and provide some illustration of how yoga zen poses can be adapted to individual problems.
Meridian exercises work by facilitating the natural flow of energy in areas where we experience blockages and stagnation. We may feel areas of blockages as stiffness, pain, tension, pain, or simply feel uncomfortable. Zen poses open up their primary meridians, and therefore, they dispel the "patient power" and allow the flow of healthy energy instead.
A little history on the meridians may be helpful. There are 12 meridians, and They are named after the various organs of the body. So we have the Lung meridian, large intestine meridians each have such a relationship energy with the organ after which they are appointed, they are not just referring to the body when talking about them. Their sense of primary is a strong reference to a type of energy along a specific channel, which just happens to be associated with a physical organ as well. So, when Oriental practitioners and yoga teachers talk about a particular meridian is deranged in some way, it does certainly not that our bodies are! I emphasize this because many people tend to be alarmed by some of the terminology, it simply follows a misunderstanding of the context in which it is used.
By understanding the importance of the energetic aspect is in Oriental philosophy, it is easier to understand how they look at the symptoms of disease, illness or other problem that we feel in our bodies. Instead of focusing on the symptom itself, the diagnosis of the East look at what happens in the meridians, and an approach to healing is on this basis, instead of solution for a strictly defined set of symptoms. What this means in practical terms, this solution is ideal for a person to a sore back or neck steep, may be very different for another.
The good news is that you do not know much theory to do zen yoga successful. No more than you need to understand the intricacies of Oriental diagnosis to apply Zen yoga exercises for your specific problem. Masunaga offers This useful guide: "first find the exercise that is most difficult to do … and then look for one that is easiest … If doing the easiest exercise causes an improvement in performance more difficult, or relieves a … symptom, it is actually strengthening the Ki [energy] in Kyo [deficient] meridian.
Masunaga was a leading shiatsu teacher in Japan, which has held exercises in the meridian system that people can use themselves. In fact, he wrote that the best way to learn about zen yoga poses, is to practice! Zen yoga seems more difficult in theory than in practice. It's actually a very fun, playful and gentle style of yoga that can be easily adapted to any fitness level Physical Activity and Health. Like tai chi, it is beneficial to health, which can be explored in more detail by courses or publications.
