Zealand Maori

The Maori are the indigenous peoples of New Zealand. Like all cultures, Maori have expressed artistically. The Maori, however, have no word for "art". The traditional expert, or tohunga, in sculpture and weaving does not create an art piece. They are only the vessel used by the gods to express in material form. This meant that all the sculptures, weavings and other artistic efforts have been accused of a spiritual power or mana. The act of creating a sculpture or other item was sacred and a gift from Tangaroa, the god of the sea

The sculpture has been and remains a large part of Maori culture. Wood was used to carve flutes, develop messages and war canoes with elaborate sculptures, treasure boxes and wall panels. Whale bone and cow bone is used for making flutes and symbolic jewelry. Shells are also carved personal adornment. The symbols are represented in the deep religious and cultural significance. The Koru or spiral is the symbol of life and rebirth. Tikis are often carved into pieces personal, on poles and wall panels to represent fertility and protection. They may be worn or displayed on special occasions.

Sculptures of sea creatures and tails of whales, an animal very special for Maori are also common. Another common theme is sculpture Manaia, a character with a bird's head. Another is Marakihau a sea monster that has taken human form. Develop bone hook ornaments were carved to symbolize prosperity, abundance and fertility. Today, sculptors new still learning the skills handed down from generation to generation.

Weaving was a necessary device. From the flax plant sturdy New Zealand Maori learned to weave coats, skirts, baskets, mats, and sails. These fabrics were colored and decorated. Some have been used everyday tasks and some have been reserved for sacred use. The weaving of fine coat was the ultimate art of women. They often combine flax with dog fur and feathers. Before the PA has been extinct moa feathers were often used for decoration. Today's students still studying the traditions of weaving. After attending school for weaving, they did not receive diplomas. Their degree is the work they produce.

The Maori have also a living history of music and dance. Visitors to Rotorua can attend concerts from noon to introduce them to culture. Of traditional dances like the Poi dance, the haka, dance or war and Tititorea complex (stick games) are made. Maori have some unique musical instruments, including putangitangi or wheezing bowl. It is a small clay bowl attached with a small hole at the top. Whistling in the hole near the top gives a mournful echo. The puritorito or wheel is a disk of wood with string threaded through the center. The disc is rotated in the center, and then the strings are stretched to create a sound like wind blowing through the reeds. Sound waves from the instrument were often used to loosen phlegm in babies. The koauau or flute is a short hollow of a flute carved from a flax stem. The end was covered by a finger, then the musician sang in the opening creating a variety of tones.
