It is true that a safari in Tanzania in the south or west is a perspective very different from that in the north. The lodges and camps of Tanzania Safari are not as polished – no sit down buffet dinner to 200 people here, but perhaps a table for 2 housed in a dry riverbed with kerosene lanterns for light and indistinct shapes and sounds of wildlife in the shade. The landscape and infrastructure with a rougher landscape undulating lakes, hills, mountains, forests and plains connected by long stretches of dirt road.
Sometimes you search for animals your 4×4, but when you want another point of view you can venture on a safari walk with rangers trained, or even take a safari boat Selous, Rufiji River or one of the lakes. The different varieties of safaris are an integral attraction of southern Tanzania and make this destination a unique safari for those seeking a more intimate experience of wildlife. In the Mahale Mountains on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, it is possible to monitor and observe the chimpanzees in their natural environment in the morning then sail on the turquoise waters of the lake in the afternoon and catch a fish for dinner.
Donning a mask and look over the side of your dhow and you may be surprised to see the colorful fish dispersing fast as a hippo walking on the lake bottom. Strange but true! But less than a thousand lucky souls experienced this phenomenon last year. The moral of this story is that, if no safari in Tanzania will be a memorable experience, it is worth researching the whole picture before you book your vacation and you will discover in May
Northern Tanzania
The problem is not that the "northern circuit" has been promoted, but most probably the most authentic holiday destinations safaris in Tanzania have been virtually ignored as the number of visitors to keep growing northern breaking point. For tour operators too long in Tanzania have been pleased to promote the easy option and reap the substantial rewards —
Why change a winning formula?
This question must now be seriously considered as a large number of tourists means more safari vehicles that create a negative impact on the environment, a limited number of hotel beds lead to overbooking and congestion in the result of national park visitors in search of a disillusioned "Out of Africa experience.
The answer to this riddle is in a product differentiation safari and that is that Tanzania is truly blessed. Take a look at a map of Tanzania and western the country, the names of Katavi and Mahale Mountains National Park in May while not being too familiar in the south, large areas of protected park National Ruaha and Selous Game Reserve stare back at you.
These areas are being visited by fewer than ten per cent of all tourists in the country and represent the Africa is last true wilderness safari opportunities. For those looking for a safari beyond advertising gloss are the areas that are worthy of investigation further. Katavi, Ruaha and Selous are larger than most European countries but it is not uncommon to spend a whole day of driving in any these parks and not meet another vehicle safari.
Ruaha National Park observations can provide more lion than other tourists in a day of games car. In Katavi herds of bison can be counted in the thousands and some of the highest numbers of elephants and wild dogs in Africa wander quietly in Selous. This contrasts with the northern circuit where it is not uncommon to queue for 10 minutes to be able to have the opportunity photo tired of this lion. In 2004, nearly 200,000 visitors have visited the Serengeti while Katavi attracted just over 1000.
