Cathedral of Augsburg in Augsburg, Bavaria is recognized as having the oldest stained glass in the world dating from the 12th century. This Romanesque church is located about 40 miles north of Munich, in the central part of southern Germany.
If you think that stained glass windows about, even a moment, our first thought is what we see in a church. First used in cathedrals, stained glass has been thinking to signify the light, as the first act of God's creation, and was recognized as the purest manifestation of God's presence, like the stained glass is came to life when illuminated by light. For medieval theologians, the saints represented dynamic images in the windows have been brought to life by the presence of God. Few people could read or write in the Middle Ages. The windows told the story the Bible and the saints in pictures, and guides, which are perhaps the monks themselves, who explain their contents to the pilgrims who came to worship.
During the Renaissance period, the windows started to become a fashionable addition to residences and public buildings. Many of the glass was became forgotten. The 18th century saw the removal of medieval stained glass. They were replaced by glass and painted glass beautiful old stained glass has been dismissed as out-of-date.
In 19th century there was renewed interest in Gothic architecture and a glass studio in England made their versions of Windows for the medieval neo-Gothic buildings. These Gothic style windows enhanced churches and simple Windows ornament have been the norm until the development of a distinctive American style by John LaFarge and Louis Comfort Tiffany.
There were two American painters who began experimenting with stained glass, independent of each other and soon became competitors. The best examples of the work of John La Farge can be found in the memory of the Harvard University Hall, the windows of the church Boston Trinity, and Judson Memorial Church, New York. John La Farge (1835-1910) designed the stained glass from 1874 to his death. LaFarge developed and copyrighted opalescent glass in 1879. Tiffany popularized it and his name became synonymous with opalescent glass and the movement of American Glass
We now use this beautiful glass in our homes that accents for our windows. It is easy to look like stained glass with pieces of the reproduction of many made today before hanging our windows, letting light filter. When one thinks of a processing window for a single window, as in a small room or in a stairwell or hallway, consider hanging a beautiful stained glass window in front of your window to brighten the space and give it more importance than it would normally get.
