Types Explained Silver Clay – Precious Metal Clay and Art Clay

Metal clay is a suspension of tiny particles of metal in a binder of clay, which can be used to make jewelry, beads and small claims. The beauty of metal clay is that it can be manipulated in the same manner as the clay, but times drawn binders are burned, leaving the metal in the form intact. Although there is a certain amount of withdrawal (between 10-15% for more modern versions) Very Detailed information can be obtained, including impressions that would cast any other method of metal working.
Silver Results in the clay-containing metal objects almost pure silver (also known as fine silver) which is ideal for enamelling. There are two brands available – Precious Metal Clay (also known as PMC) and Art Clay Silver (ACS). Precious Metal Clay has been developed in the early years 1990 in Japan and consists of microscopic particles of pure silver (gold dust or fine) and water-soluble binder that burns during the cooking. The original PMC (now called "Standard") must be fired in a kiln at a temperature of 1650F and it has a high withdrawal rate in the order 30%. Two other versions were developed later called PMC +, which can be drawn at 1490F and PMC3, which can be fired temperatures as low as 1100F. These two latest versions of PMC have much lower rates of withdrawal, which is much finer detail to be drawings.
Art Clay Silver (ACS) has also been developed in Japan and is similar in consistency of PMC +. The main difference is that ACS can be derived using a flashlight or gas oven. Because of subtle differences in the binding components and the cooking time longer, with ACS benefited from much lower withdrawal percentage – only 8.10%. This means that ACS can be processed further, without loss of definition an excellent job. Art Clay Slow Dry was introduced shortly after, which is much more working time before requiring the shot, allowing the work to be subtle molded in clay without any loss of ductility.
Art 650 and Art Clay 650 Slow Dry Clay are now increasingly popular because they not only have a longer working time, but can be fired at temperatures as low as 650C/1200F. This allows to integrate jewelers glass and silver sterling in the design without fear of damaging the components. AIDA, the manufacturers of the ACS has also established Oil Paste, a product used only on metals fired clay or milled into fine silver and Overlay Paste, which is designed for drawing designs on glass and porcelain. Both products have allowed the use metal clay products to be incorporated into a new range of models and media to expand the potential of this product.
Metal clays allow jewelers to work with a material that is as malleable as regular modeling clay, but fine product (almost pure) silver jewelry, exquisite complexity and beauty. Once polished, it has a sparkle and shine that is easily comparable to throw money and because product development in recent years for the withdrawal is no longer a problem. The type used depends on personal preference both types have their advantages, but with metal clay in your jewel gives you a new way to explore with beautiful results.
