Tin glaze reached England via the Netherlands to 1550. At first it was called gallyware, but with the rise of the manufacturing center of Dutch Delft pottery came to be called Delft. The first examples have survived are the Malling jugs, so called because a early specimen of nature has been preserved in the church of West Malling, Kent. They were almost certainly made in London. The pitchers are usually silver and pewter frames. Similar fixtures, often made in England, are seen in Rhenish jugs imported into England and occasionally Turkish pitchers on approximately the same period.
