When you refuse to buy one pre-made fabrics, you can always buy a roll of fabric finish or raw canvas. The first step in the process towards building a finished canvas is the stretching of the canvas. Once the stretch is done it is time to begin cloth canvas if you bought a roll of raw canvas.
The reason it is necessary to begin a raw canvas is that the linen and cotton fabrics that will eventually rot when saturated with oil painting. To prevent the appearance of rotting canvas fabric must be treated with glue or gelatin solution to such a size "CALL" canvas and then coated with a primer oil base.
Here are the steps to be executed in the boot process:
1) After the first stretch of canvas, brush uniformly glue "low" or a gelatin solution on raw canvas using a wide nylon or bristle brush. Note, do not stretch raw canvas too tight, because the boot will shrink the canvas sheet and then tighten automatically.
2) When the fabric dries, the coating a mixture of white lead in oil and turpentine, again using a wide brush. The brilliant white surface that results, it is easier to measure the colors you use for your painting.
3) Once the canvas is dry, sand it lightly.
4) Then, apply a second coat of white lead in oil and turpentine solution, and sand the canvas again.

Many artists are also working on wood panels, a test fixture for oil painting. The old masters have worked on oak, poplar, and mahogany, but today, "wood panel" can mean anything from a piece of plywood poplar to Masonite. It is increasingly popular because it is inexpensive, durable, and can be cut into virtually any size.
Wood panels are perfect for rendering issues, complex detail, when the frame of the canvas could be too uneven. You can buy prepared boards or you can make your own. You must begin the panel with gesso before you begin painting. Dilute the gesso with water, apply brush a painter WIDE, let dry, then sand smooth. Repeat twice or more. If you like a smaller more rough the tooth, add less water and not sand the board.
You can also paint in oil watercolor paper or vellum. You can size paper with an acrylic medium first for the oil paint will not end up rotting paper. If you want your paint will last longer long (permanently), you should choose heavy paper of at least 200 lbs.
