As with all things of nature, mountain lion attacks seem to ebb and flow. As I discovered today the weather has much to do with their appearance as anything. When the weather is dry they are driven to lower elevations to find water and along the way certain foods.
Mountain lions are very different in their tactics that bear. Bears are obviously much larger than the mountain lions that can get to 120 pounds or more. Bears are just using you in their surprisingly quick reflexes and the size and brute force.
Mountain lions stalk their prey. They are often of a victim before they know it. They use stealth and speed. They go for the head or neck and killing quickly.
I would never go in backcountry without at least one big bear pepper spray. The bear spray most commonly used has a range of up to 30 feet EVER. Cougar and Bears have extremely sensitive noses and do not have them abused. They respond quickly to a dose of pepper spray which is exactly what you want.
Here is another kind of defense that works for mountain lions. Because you're probably more anyway, they can be bluffed. If you see a mountain lion, stand as tall as you can, keep your arms to look bigger, and speak loudly and aggressively.
Discard any what you can find rocks, branches, whatever you can find if you can. Do not run and do not turn your back. In fact, threaten the mountain lion with the air advance towards him, but not too close. And of course you have your pepper spray in hand.
If a mountain lion is able to sneak on you and attacks you, defend you with all your strength, your life may be in the balance. You may be surprised chat with some opposition, and he'll probably leave.
