Republic of Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa. It shares borders with Algeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal. Mali, formerly a confederation of two French colonies, the Sudanese Republic and Senegal became free in 1960. When Senegal left the federation on behalf of the Sudanese Republic was changed to Mali.
Mali was under a dictatorial regime in 1991. The first elected president took office in Mali in 1992.
Mali is a poor country. 65 per cent of its surface is desert about 70 percent of the population is employed in agriculture and fishing.
Mali has a low life expectancy of 48 years high infant mortality and adult literacy to low 17 per cent of the adult population is HIV positive.
The country has landscapes desert beautiful, the beautiful buildings of mud mosques of loft decorated first single, but exquisite artistic, colorful, relaxed, nice people, extraordinary walks along the Bandiagara Escarpment beautiful and camels of the ghost town of Timbuktu.
If you can be there in December for the Feast cattle crossing or April for the mask dance festival, the better.
Towns to visit include certain elements following.
Bandiagara Escarpment is one of Africas great cultures, a fine wood carving primitive earthen architecture in a bizarre superb setting, farming methods and some curious customs really strange.
Mopti is a busy tourist town with a good port for cruises waterways, short or long term, though long trips will be possible only in August in November.
This is a convenient starting stone for Bandiagara, Timbuktu and other northern cities.
Djenne is difficult to make but the city's architecture and a terrible earth mud mosque sensational, but you can not go inside it has a large market Monday.
A Greener Segou, faded colonial version of Djenne whose terrible mud mosque and the market Monday. And the news in particular it is much closer to Bamako, only 200km.
Timbuktu is not much there except the name and lots of sand, but interesting extinct crossing. Méharées in camps of Tuareg Blue Men are very popular here.
Its possible to travel by boat when the river is fairly high, although select your ticket carefully.
Bamako capital Malis a dusty, noisy, unsightly mess, but it has many exotic sights, especially the local and markets, and a National Museum responsible for great tribal sculptures.
Including travel independently to the extreme north or east of Mali, unless you want a close encounters with heavily armed bandits, which has attracted tourists in 2004.
The Bandiagara Escarpment is one of the best in the world of hiking both beautiful and fascinating, but be very careful when choosing a guide and waiting facilities on their way to be original.
You really need a reliable guide to the Dogon hiking area, but 80 percent of self-proclaimed guides are simply opportunists who are becoming ignorant May aggressive when they're exposed, so take time to see the candidates in depth. Best of all is to get recommendations from other travelers.
An excursion on the river Niger will be a memorable experience, but only possible at certain times of the year. Camel Riding from Timbuktu with a Tuareg guide sand.Wildlife should satisfy your lust for birds in the Dogon country near the Niger River and the common hippopotamus worth a visit.
