Does the Pixie word from the type of Greek pottery called Pyxis?
I study the ancient Greek civilization Studies Social and chose to replicate the shape of a Pyxis for the section of the pottery. I have done research and my teacher asked if words are linked.
I found these: c.1630, perhaps Swed. dialect pysk "little fairy", but the origin of West County suggests ultimate source is Cornwall and thus something Celtic. Earliest references were pixy-path "bewilderment," lit. "path which one is led astray by pixies, "and Pixie-led" lost. "Pixies" http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pixie (and also Piskie Pigs as they are sometimes known in Cornwall) are mythical creatures of folklore, considered to be particularly concentrated in areas around Devon and Cornwall, which suggests a Celtic origin for the belief and name.
