A Pressure Suit

Author: dresscloth

A pressure suit is a protective suit worn by high-altitude pilots who may fly at altitudes where atmospheric pressure is too low for an unprotected person to survive, even breathing pure oxygen at positive pressure. Such combinations may be either full pressure (ie spacesuit) or partial pressure (as used by the crew of the air). Partial pressure suits to work providing mechanical counter pressure to facilitate breathing at altitude.

Above 40,000 feet, oxygen must be under positive pressure to maintain an altitude equivalent of 10,000 feet. At altitudes above 50,000 feet in a pressurized suit is necessary while at 55,000 feet the atmospheric pressure is so low that water vapor from the body grows until it evaporates. Above the "Armstrong Limit" (around 63,000 feet) of water – and hence the blood [edit] – returns to the normal temperature of human body 37 ° C (99 ° F) and protective equipment is needed even for the vacuum conditions.

History

Russia
In Russia, the first full pressure suit was designed by engineer Evgeniy Chertanovskiy in Leningrad in 1931. The CH-1 was a touch tight Combination with headphones that do not have joints, which requires substantial force to move the arms and legs when under pressure. This has been corrected in prosecutions later. Work on full pressure suits was conducted during 1936-41 by the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI), to similar work by the Institute of Gromov Flight Research (LII) after the Second World War. The LII has produced four experimental pressure suits for crews, and in 1959 began work on pressure suits for space flight [1]. Chertanovskiy invented the name for skafanders combinations pressurized in the Skaf Greek words – boat, vessel and Andros – man skafander has since become the term used by Russians to refer to the dress standard diving or spacesuits.

Haldane-Davis
In 1931, the American Mark Ridge became obsessed with beating the world record altitude in a balloon gondola open. Recognizing that the flight would require special protective clothing, he visited the United Kingdom in 1933 where he talks with Scottish physiologist John Scott Haldane, who had published a concept of a full pressure suit fabric in the 1920s. Both sought help Robert Henry Davis of Siebe Gorman, the inventor of the Davis Escape Set, and with Haldane and resources of Davis' costumes prototype was built. Ridge I tested in a low-pressure chamber at a simulated altitude of 50,000 feet. However, he received no support for further work and has never made his attempt world record. On September 28, 1936 Squadron Leader FRD Swain of the Royal Air Force established the official world altitude record at 49,967 feet in a Bristol Type 138 wearing a costume like [2].

Wiley Post
In 1934, aviator Wiley Post, in collaboration with Russell S. Colley of the company BF Goodrich produced the world's first practical pressure suit. The body of the function had three layers: long underwear, a rubber bladder with air under pressure and a combination external rubberised parachute fabric that was attached to a frame with arm and leg joints that allowed orders to operate Post aircraft and walk to and from the aircraft. Attached to the frame have gloves pigskin, rubber boots and an aluminum and plastic helmet with a detachable faceplate which can accommodate earphones and a microphone throat. In the first flight using the suit, September 5, 1934, Post reached an altitude of 40,000 feet above Chicago, and in flights later, reached 50,000 feet.

World War II
In the United States, a large amount effort has been devoted to the development of combinations of pressure during the Second World War. While BF Goodrich led the field, other companies involved in the research include the Arrowhead Rubber Co., Goodyear, United States and rubber. The University of Minnesota worked with Bell Aircraft and the U.S. National Bureau of Standards. The Bureau of Standards and the University of California acted as clearing houses to distribute information all companies involved. No effect fully mobile pressure suits were filed in the Second World War, but the effort provided a valuable basis for further development.
David Clark Company
After the war, the Cold War caused the continued financing of development aviation, which included high altitude, high speed research such as NACA X-1. James Henry of the University of Southern California has developed costume partial pressure using a gas mask to provide oxygen under pressure, with the pressure of inflation gas as rubber tubes called capstans to tighten the action and provide sufficient cons-mechanical balance the pressure of breathing necessary to prevent hypoxia a given altitude. The David Clark Company has provided technical support and resources, and a jersey prototype was tested in a simulation of 90000 feet Wright Field, 1946. Design Henry was subsequently developed by David Clark Company in the S-1 and T-1 flight suit used by X-1 pilots. The X-1 was managed by flare Douglas, whose goal was to exceed Mach 2 and a pressure suit improvement was required. David Clark won the contract in 1951 with their first full pressure suit, the 4 Model Full pressure suit, he was first flown in 1953 by USMC aviator Marion E. Carl who became the first military aviator in the United States to wear a full pressure suit at the same time establishing an unofficial record worlds altitude in the skyrocket.

Goodrich Mk III & IV
U.S. requirements for reconnaissance aircraft like high-altitude U-2, and fighters to intercept the high altitude of the Soviet apparatus led the U.S. Navy to be responsible for developing a full pressure suit in the 1950s. Working with BF Goodrich rubber and Arrowhead, the NSU has produced a series of drawings that have led to the Goodrich Mk III and IV. While intended for the use of aircraft, the Mk IV was then used by NASA with minor modifications to the Project Mercury Marine Mark V. Meanwhile, David Clark won the contract to produce costumes for the X-15 project, his XMC-2 suits qualified as spacesuits first U.S. [3].

RAF
The Aeromedical Center RAF Royal Aircraft developed a helmet Partial Pressure August 29, 1955 in an English Electric Canberra. However, the evaluation of the combination showed that encumbered the wearer and do not integrate wrong with systems to escape the RAF. Instead, the IAM RAF proposed a suit and minimum coverage would be "get-me-down" protection. The RAF never issued a full partial pressure, preferring to use anti-g trousers in conjunction with leotards pressure (which applied counter mechanical pressure bearer chest).

ACES
The Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES), which was first used by pilots of the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1970s, replaced the similar David Clark Model 1030 full pressure suits worn by SR-71 pilots, and was identical the XMC-2 clothing worn by the X-15 pilots and astronauts Gemini. Modified versions of the proceedings were adopted by NASA for use Early Space Shuttle, the changes made attachments to a parachute harness and inflatable bladders in the legs to prevent the crew awarding during reentry.
